DAREN News, are articles and information about the Digital Amateur Radio "Emergency" Network of WV, which operates on 145.69 MHz.  Anyone having any information about DAREN, or Amateur Radio in general, and would like to share it with others, may send it to WA8LLM @ PKBGWV on 145.69 MHz, or to my E-Mail: wa8llm@yahoo.com.  A State Wide DAREN NET is operated every Saturday from 7:00 pm to 10:00 pm, and lately, before and after those hours.  The DAREN Net Announcement, showing the MAIN NCS, ALTERNATE NCS, NODEs accessible to both, and the previous week's check-ins, are posted by Thursday on most of the Main county DAREN PBBS'.  The DAREN News can also be found on the www.wc8ec.com and www.wc8ec.org websites.

Since the Wood County NODE/PBBS of WOODWV/PKBGWV went off the air last Sunday evening when the temperature got down to about 10 degrees, I put together another station using a Motorola Transceiver.  The station seemed to work okay with some stations, but not others.  I think the audio level coming from the transceiver to the TNC may be just a little bit too low.  Today I'm going to try to correct the problem, and change the way the audio comes from the transceiver.  Right now the receive audio comes out of the programming jack, which has everything needed for the TNC.  I'm going to try the speaker output, but I may need to isolate the output to the TNC.  The transceiver manual says do not ground the speaker output, so I'll need to isolate it with a one-to-one audio transformer.  I have the new station set up to take the place of the original one, when and if, it goes off the air.  The new station is located here at my house using a four bay antenna on the top of the 90 foot tower.  I need to get the new station to communicate with all the other stations.  All I need to do is go into the back door of the TNC of the new station and change the NODE Name, and the PBBS Name.  Once I'm sure the station is working the way it should, I'll go to the main tower site and swap the two stations out.

Conard Richardson, KE8HLU, is still working the bugs out of his Packet-to- Internet station.  This week he corrected a problem where the station wouldn't take canned messages.  He's hoping to have the station in good working order by Field Day so messages can be sent to the ARRL Section Manager and Section Emergency Coordinator by leaving the Field Day site by Amateur Radio RF.  He keeps the station on the air a lot, but not all of the time.  I'm going to give him a Motorola radio, and maybe an antenna for the station, when we can get together.  If you want to play with the system, when it's on the air, you can connect to it through WOODWV and RITCWV.  The name of the system is WAVEWV.  If you play with the system, and find any problems, please let Conard or me know.

There were 39 check-ins to the State Wide DAREN Net this week.  There was one new participant to the net this week and that was Erik Yater, KD8RML, from Follansbee, WV.  I want to welcome Erik to the net and to the DAREN system.  I hope Erik will participate as often as possible in the net, and use and learn about the DAREN Network.
